Each Mototoken can be downloaded as a GPX file, and loaded to a GPS to navigate to.Ī route file is best thought of as a collection of waypoints, that make up a “path” that you can follow.Ī route is manually created, typically in map editing software. This map features waypoints at locations that are interesting to visit, such as epic lookouts, iconic rivers, historic places, or weird and wacky landmarks. You can use this GPX file to return to this great campsite later, plus you can share the GPX file with others, so they can visit it too.Ī real-life example of a waypoint is the Mototoken map below. Your GPS device will then create a GPX file that stores the coordinates of that location. Let’s say you find a great campsite, and you “mark a waypoint” on your GPS device. This is handy when you are out exploring, and you find a cool place that you want to mark for returning to later. This action will “create” a waypoint at your current location. Most GPS devices offer the ability for you to “mark a waypoint” by pressing a button. That’s it – a waypoint is simply the map coordinates of a single location. Waypoints are typically used to mark the location of a campsite, a hut, an iconic lookout, etc. The differences are described below: What is a Waypoint?Ī waypoint contains GPS coordinates of a single point (a single location on a map). gpx extension and essentially look the same on the surface, a GPX file can contain either a waypoint, a route, or a track. This includes dedicated GPS devices such as a Garmin GPS, and also smartphone devices with map navigation apps installed. Now, next time you turn your GPS on, your GPS will be able to see this GPX file, inside the GPX folder. In this article I refer to using GPX files with a "GPS device". This will paste (save a copy) of the GPX file that you just copied from your computer. Next, right click anywhere inside the GPX folder and select “ Paste”. Once you find the GPX folder, open it up so you are inside it. The image below makes it a little easier to see where the GPX folder is on your GPS. Do note that the GPX folder will be located inside the folder named "Garmin". So, using your computer, navigate to the GPX folder on your GPS. If the GPS finds a GPX file, it will let you view it, and navigate to it. Why? Well, when you turn your GPS on, the GPS looks inside this GPX folder and checks what GPX files are there. The folder you want to find is called "GPX". With this in mind, you want to find a specific folder on your GPS. Inside your GPS are folders that are similar to an external hard drive, so the process of navigating the folders on your GPS, is very much the same as navigating the folders on an external hard drive. The same thing applies when you connect a GPS device to your computer. You can also add files, and delete files, among other things. When you connect an external hard drive to your computer, you can navigate the folders of that external hard drive. Step 4 – Navigate to the GPX folder on your GPS, and paste the GPX file The computer will take a copy of this GPX file, and allow you to take the next step, which is to paste a copy of this GPX file into your GPS.
